This study evaluated the effects of the Gestalt Group Art Therapy program on self-expression and self-regulation, as applied to the children of low-income families. The subjects for the study included 16 grade 4 to 6 elementary school students at H local Children's Center in K city, who were from low-income families. They were randomly assigned into either an experimental group or a control group, and classified by age and socioeconomic status. The students in the experimental group were given Gestalt Group Art Therapy treatment consisting of 12 total sessions per week, with each session lasting 90 minutes. Evaluations were conducted before, during and after therapy. As a result of the study, a significant difference was observed between the two groups and evaluation periods in terms of the overall evaluation scores relating to the children's self-expression and self-regulation. The teacher at the local children's center noted significant differences between the experimental and control groups in terms of emotional and behavioral self-regulation in everyday life. The evaluation of the session process, as related to the temporal stages of this therapy for both the therapist and the participants, revealed that the scores for all sub-elements (self-expression, self-regulation and participation) were high in the early session, fell or rose slightly after falling in the middle session, and rose sharply in the last session. Very similar changes appeared in the evaluations for both the children and therapists. The results of the study imply that theGestalt Group Art Therapy had a positive effect on self-expression and self-regulation of children from low-income families.
