본 연구는 읽기과제 수행에 영향을 미치는 메타인지와 작동기억 간의 관련성을 경험적으로 검증하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서 사용한 읽기과제는 학습자가 지속적인 인지적 모니터링(cognitive monitoring)을 통해 오류 문장을 발견해야 하는 오류발견과제(error detection task)이다. 초등학교 6학년 학생 168명을 한 개의 비교집단과 세 개의 실험집단으로 구분하여 배치하고, 모든 실험은 개별 컴퓨터를 통해 실시하였다. 사전검사로 세 가지 작동기억 검사와 메타인지적 지식 검사를 실시했고, 네 집단에 공통적으로 제시되는 읽기과제는 수준을 두지 않았다. 이와는 달리 세 개의 실험집단에 읽기과제와 함께 부과한 작동기억 영역별 이차과제는 1수준부터 3수준까지 무선적으로 제시되었다.실험 결과는 세 가지 작동기억 용량의 상위 집단이 각각 하위 집단보다 유의미하게 높은 읽기과제의 성취를 보여 작동기억이 읽기학습 성취에 중요한 변인임을 시사한다. 중앙집행장치를 억제한 집단의 읽기과제 성취도가 다른 집단의 성취도와 유의한 차이는 없었으나, 중앙집행장치 억제집단이 가장 낮은 오류 발견율을 보임으로써 선행연구와 방향성이 일치하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 회귀분석 결과, 중앙집행장치가 메타인지를 요구하는 읽기과제 성취를 가장 잘 설명하는 변인으로 나타나 메타인지와 중앙집행장치가 기능적 측면에서 매우 밀접한 관련이 있음을 보여주었다.

영어 초록

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between metacognition and working memory in reading comprehension. The subjects were 168 sixth graders from TB elementary school in Gwangju city. All subjects were given the working memory test and the metamemory questionnaire in advance and then they were randomly assigned to the three experimental groups and the control. The control group performed only the reading task in which syntactic and semantic errors were included. Three experimental groups were given the dual tasks of the reading task and the concurrent working memory suppression tasks.The findings from the study were summarized as follows: First, there was not any significant difference in error detection rate and reaction time among the experimental groups and the control. The result of planned comparison, however, showed that the central executive suppression group achieved the lowest error detection rate. It could be considered as the evidence that the central executive had significant effects on reading comprehension. Second, the high central executive working memory span groups detected more text errors than the low group. Also, the high phonological loop and visuospatial working memory span groups showed the same results. It means that working memory plays important roles in reading comprehension. Third, the result of regression analysis showed that the central executive was the most significant variable to explain the variance of reading comprehension that demands subjects' metacognitive regulation. This study concluded from the three findings that metacognitive regulation could be similar to the functions of the central executive of working memory.Key words : Reading Comprehension, Metacognition, Working Memory, Central Executive
