The main aims of the paper are to discuss the challenges of the western natural science to the Confucian Ethics. Probably there are many challenges by the West which we need to discuss in detail, but I'd like focus on two main viewpoints here. Firstly, the authors of the Book of Changes maintained that creation of life was caused by the combination of yin and yang because they believed the life was the result of yin yang operation, which represents Heaven and Earth, respectively. The individual life cannot, according to the Book of Changes, be created if yin and yang operate separately; creation can be completed only in the process of responses between yin and yang. Yet the development of contemporary biotechnology gives a great shock to such yin yang's view of life. Cloning, essentially the human cloning signified the yin yang's view of life in the Book of Changes cannot be the general method of creating lives anymore. The impact of the human cloning asks all of us to accept the new life view.Secondly, the rapid development of bioscience is also a great shock to the human nature theory of Mencius that human nature is good, which is located in the core part of the Confucian ethical teachings. It, however, also gives us to a new chance to reinterpret Mencius' understanding on human nature from the evolutionary ethical perspectives. Both the evolutionary ethicists and sociobiologists have challenged the conventional view that human moral development is based on reasoning and argue in stead that man is biologically prepared to acquire moral standards. Their contention is quite similar to that of the human nature theory of Mencius in the sense that they consider that the roots of moral principles are in our nature, in which we have the instinctive power for creating moral standards. In rief, we can successfully reinterpret the claims of Mencius on human nature from the perspectives of evolutionary ethics and sociobiology which are remarkably relied upon the development of contemporary biology.
