It is the nature of the field that there have been competing visions and turf wars of thesocial studies from the 19th century to the present. One of the root causes of these futile
arguments is the opposed interpretations on Dewey's educational theory among the social
studies-related camps.
My intention is to present various interpretations on Dewey's educational theory in the
issues-centered curriculum camp and the history-centered curriculum camp. The first part
of this study examines positive understandings and acceptances on Dewey's educational
theory of the NEA's 1916 Committee on Social Studies and Hunt & Metcalf in the light of
social studies. The second part of this study examines negative criticisms of Dewey's
educational theory from the literatures of K. Egan and D. Ravitch.
The result of this study may provide a compass needed to reexamine Dewey's
educational theory in the perspective of the social studies through analysis of the opposed
interpretations on Dewey's theory of the issues-centered camp and the history-centered
camp. Furthermore, interpretations of both camps on Dewey's educational theory are
expected to provide some important implications to establish social studies-specific Dewey's
educational theory.
