Paternalism is a noble idea for governments to employ in order to prevent their citizens` from harming themselves. Indeed though, there is a fine line between this type of "prevention" and restriction of personal liberties. Even if a government were to "to provide any information" acting paternalistically to prevent use of an unhealthy product, "it will also steer people, whether it wants to or not. “It is far too simple, and behaviourally naive, to draw a sharp line between acceptable ‘provision of information’ and unacceptable ‘mind control’,” argue Ms Jolls and Mr Sunstein" (The New Paternalism). It seems then that objectivity, when a government is acting paternistically, is impossible to achieve.
