Second, there is a saying that ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child, which is the same as a Korean saying that ‘Give a rice cake to the child who you don’t like, and spank the child who you like.’ Parents use physical punishments hoping their bad behavior will go away because they love their children. In other word, corporal punishment is basically based on parent’s and teacher’s love. If they don’t love their children, they would just neglect and ignore their children, not wasting of time and energy to spank children. According to the statistics of a city hall in Daejun in 2001, 89.9 percent of parents approved of corporal punishment in the class, and 93.2 percent of teachers were in favor of it for the purpose of an education. (Jae-hak Jung, Kokmin-Ilbo) In addition to their love, children would not understand why they have to get punishment when they are hit by their teacher, however as time goes by and as they grow up they tend to realize the reasons and appreciate sincerely missing their previous teachers.
