『베오울프』는 고대 서사시 중 가장 대표적인 작품으로 여겨진다. 가장 주된 이유는『베오울프』에서 게르만족의 삶과 정서는 물론이거니와 그들의 체제를 이해하는데 큰 도움을 제공해주기 때문이다. 특히 작품의 영웅문화가 이 작품을 고대 영시를 대표하는 최고의 작품으로 만들어 준다. 영웅이란 개념은 시대에 따라 달라 질 수밖에 없는데, 작품에서의 베오울프(beowulf)나 전사들의 영웅관이 오늘날 우리 사회가 요구하는 영웅에게 요구되는 덕목은 아니다. 하지만 이 당시 게르만족의 사회는 ‘전사사회’였고, 이 사회에서 베오울프(beowulf)가 보여주는 덕목은 필수적인 것들임에 틀림이 없다. 예를 들어 육체적 강인함, 용기, 명예, 신뢰, 운명 등이 있는데 구체적인 것은 (2)번에서 예문과 함께 다루도록 하겠다.

전사 사회인만큼 당연한 것이지만, 전투생활을 하면서 육체적 강인함(power)이 필수적으로 요구된다. p. 13, ‘of mankind he was the strongest of might in the time of this life’에서 베오울프를 그 당시 가장 힘이 센 사람으로 묘사하고 있고, mighty one, war-leader등으로 지칭하고 있다. 그리고 p. 17, `I should seek you because they know what my strength can accomplish`부분을 보면 그의 육체적 강인함이 그를 영웅으로 만들어 준 것임을 짐작할 수 있다. 특히 베오울프는 그 동안 예이츠족의 전사들을 살육했던 그렌델(grendel)과 그렌델의 엄마(grendel`s mother)를 갑옷도 걸치지 않고 맨손으로 상대하는 엄청난 힘을 보여준다(p.17, I scorn to bear sword or broad shield ~ ).
왕이 된 베오울프는 늙은 몸을 이끌고 용기 있게 용과 대적한다(p.52, He had no fear for himself of combat ~ ) , p.21 ‘show your great courage’라는 짧은 문장에서도 영웅에게 용기는 중요한 덕목임을 확인시켜준다.
