Nowadays, when people are asked about their cultural activity, it is very natural to mention about going to the movies, listening recorded music, reading books or at most going to more expensive performances. It is surely accepted that today’s cultural activities generally revolve around these intentionally created cultural sites. Compared to the past, what is changed in current culture underneath these ‘unnatural’ cultural activities? And where is it going? To find answers to these questions, this essay will first examine the concept ‘market driven culture’ and compare the past and the present of cultural market. After that, this essay continues to discuss about existing theories about cultural industry and will evaluate the present and the future of cultural industry in relation to the capitalism.
