의령향안의 입록과 이와 관련된 갈등양상

이 글에서는 의령향안의 작성시기 및 입록자 가문의 분포, 입록을 둘러싼 갈 등양상 등을 살펴보았다. 의령향안은 16세기 말부터 1630년대까지 입록이 지 속적으로 이루어지다가 이후 한동안 향안 입록의 사실이 보이지 않는다. 1698 년에 가서 다시 입록이 이루어지고 다시 1707년에도 작성되지만, 이를 기점으 로 의령 사족층의 정상적인 향안입록은 종식된 것 같다. 원래 의령에는 의령현과 신번현의 토성이 있었지만, 그동안의 역사적 변천 속 에서 대부분 사라지거나 다른 곳으로 이동해 버렸다. 그 대신 고려 말 이후 조 선 중기에 걸쳐 다른 성씨들이 의령에 들어와 정착하였다. 이 가문의 인물들은 의령에 정착한 이후 문과와 생진과 및 무과에 합격하여 관직에 진출함으로써, 사족가문으로서의 권위를 유지해 나가고 있었다. 또 임진왜란 때 의병활동을 전개함으로써, 임란 이후 의령에서의 그들의 입지를 강화하기도 하였다. 이들 은 상호간에 중첩적인 결혼관계를 유지하면서 자신들의 지배적인 지위를 유지 해 나가려 하였다. 의령에서의 향안 입록을 둘러싼 갈등양상으로는 우선 단향 모록의 문제를 들 수 있다. 단향자는 입록이 원칙적으로 허용되지 않은 의령지역에서도 17세기 후반 단향자들의 입록이 이루어지는 현상을 보이고 있었다. 다른 고을과 마찬 가지로 향안 입록에서 적용되던 엄격한 기준이 서서히 붕괴되고 있었음을 보여 준다고 하겠다. 17세기 후반 의령에서는 향안 입록을 둘러싼 가문간의 갈등도 여러 가지 형태로 나타났다. 이와 같이 향안 입록을 둘러싼 분쟁이 격화되면서 향안의 작성은 1707년을 마지막으로 실질적으로 종식되었다. 의령에서도 서 인, 노론의 당파 입장을 취하는 가문이 나타나기는 했지만, 향안 입록을 둘러싸 고 다른 고을에서 나타났던 당파간의 갈등현상은 의령지역에서는 향안 작성이 종식될 당시까지는 거의 나타나지 않았던 것 같다. 이것은 인근 고을인 진주에서 당파적 갈등이 심하였음에도 불구하고 18세기 말까지 향안 입록이 지속되고 있었던 점과도 대비된다. 이처럼 같은 경상우도 에 속해 있다 하더라도 고을마다 향안 작성의 종식 현상은 다양하게 나타나고 있었다.

영어 초록

This paper looked over the times of the making of the hyangans(鄕 案) and the family spread of the entrants into them and the complications for entering them in Euryong(宜寧) in the late Chosun dynasty. Entering the hyangans had appeared continuously from the 16th centry to the 1630's, but it had not appeared for some time since. Though it appeared again in 1698 and 1707, the making of the hyangans might be stopped after this time. Originally, there were the native families of Euryonghyon(宜寧縣) and Sinbunhyon(新繁縣) in Euryong, but most of them disappeared or moved to other district in the course of the historical changes. While from the end of Koryo dinasty to the middle period of Chosun dinasty other families immigrated in Euryong. The members of these families kept their authorities as the sajok(士 族) families by becoming the public servants through the civil service examination or the military service examination and passing the minor civil examination(生進科) in Euryong. They also strengthened their standings by raising the loyal armies in imjinweran(1592 war). They tried to maintain their dominant positions by keeping the metrimonial relations overlaped each other. One of the complications for entering the hyangan resulted from the problem of the unfair entries to the hyangans by the danhyangs(單鄕: persons insufficient to the capacities). Since the end of the 17th century, there also appeared several cases that the danhyangs entered the hyangans in Euryong where they could not entered the hyangans. It shows that the stern standards which were applied on the entry to the hyangans gradually broke down. There were various complications for entering the hyangans among the families in Euryong in the end of the 17th century, too. Thus as the complications for entering the hyangans became vigorous, the making of the hyangans was ended in 1707. Though the part of the sajok families gradually turned to the positions of Suin(西人) or Noron(老論) in Euryong, few complications between the political parties that appeared in other districts did not yet appear before those days when the making of the hyangans was stopped. It is set against the fact that the making of the hyangans was continued till the end the 18th century in Jinju where the complications between the political parties were violent. Thus the figures stopping the making of the hyangans appeared variously according to each distrit though the districts belonged to the same area, Kyongsangudo.
