1강 / 중세 영문학의 배경 : [Beowulf Sails to Denmark] / 고대영어 시대-설화 ====================
(Beowulf hears about Grendel and decides to travel from his home in Geatland (southern Sweden) to Heorot (in northeast Denmark) to see if he can help out.) 베어울프는 그렌델에 관한 (이야기를) 듣고, 그가 혹시 도움이 될 수 있나 하여, 남부 스웨덴의 Geatland의 그의 고향으로부터 덴마크 북동쪽의 Heorot로 떠나기로 결심한다.
A thane of Hygelac, a good man among the Geats, heard in his homeland of Grendel's deeds: 이에츠(Geats)의 훌륭한 인물, 히엘락(Hygelac) 왕의 신하(베어울프)는 그의 고향에서 그렌델의 소행을 들었다. of mankind he was the strongest of might in the time of this life, noble and great. 그는 현세(이생)에서 가장 강력한 힘을 지닌 자로서, 고상하며 위대한 인물이었다.
He bade that a good ship be made ready for him, 그는 그를 위해 훌륭한 배가 갖춰지도록 명령을 내리고, said he would seek the war-king over the swan's road, the famous prince, 바다를 항해하여 유명한 왕자(데인 족의 왕 흐로드가르), 전쟁의 왕을 찾아가겠노라고 말했는데,
since he had need of men. 그는 사람(전사)들이 필요했기 때문이다.
Very little did wise men blame him for that adventure, though he was dear to them; 그(베어울프)는 그들(고향의 현인들)에게 소중한 존재였으나, 그들은 그 모험을 나무라지 않았다.
