8. Whom do you respect the most? The person whom I respect the most is Ahn Chul Su. He’s the former CEO of a computer security company called Ahn Laboratories, now a professor of Seoul National University. I admire his ability to overcome challenges as well as his contribution to society.
Ahn Chul Su was remarkably talented and versatile—he built three outstanding careers in three different fields. He started out in medical school, and could have become a professor of medicine, but he was intrigued by computer technology, and decided to set up his own computer security company.
He was the first person in Korea to create an antivirus program. In fact, he was a world-class leader in his field, since at that time only two or three companies in the entire world dealt with computer viruses.
I’ve also been impressed with Ahn Chul Su’s selflessness and his keen sense of duty toward others. While he was in medical school, he volunteered at a local hospital every weekend, and when he first created an antivirus program, he distributed it to the public free of charge. Although he still charged companies a modest fee for his product, he made sure that individuals paid nothing for his software.
