1. What is this chapter about?
- Adverbial subordinate clause
A subordinate clause that has an adverbial function. An adverbial subordinate clause may be a clause of time, manner, purpose, reason, result, concession, or condition.
a. She called as I was leaving.
b. Since you’ve apologized, I’ll consider the matter closed.
-> Adverbial subordinate clauses are introduced by specific subordinators.
- Free adjuncts
An adverbial subordinate clause that has no subordinator or overt subject and begins with a present participle.
a. Arriving at the scene of the accident, the team immediately began treating the survivors.
b. High waves swamped the boats, sinking several and carrying others out into the bay.
1. Adverbial Subordinate Clauses with Subordinators
The set of subordinators that introduce adverbial subordinate clauses includes single words such as when, since, while, and because, as well as multiword members such as as soon as. These subordinators establish the relation between the events or conditions in the subordinate clause and those in the main clause.
- Form
Adverbial subordinate clauses usually have an overt subject and a verb with tense or a modal, as illustrated in (1). Most adverbial subordinate clauses may follow or precede a main clause.
(1) a. She called him after she had finished her dinner.
