한반도의 석기-금속기 전환 과정은 청동기시대 중기 후반부터 원형점토대토기 문화를 거쳐, 삼각형점 토대토기 문화까지로 말해지고 있다. 이 과정 중에서, 위신재는 석기에서 청동기로, 실용기는 석기에서 철기로 대체되었다고 이야기되며, 이러한 인식에는 청동기시대 중기부터 삼각형점토대토기 문화까지 동일한 문화 계통, 생업경제를 영위했다는 전제가 깔려 있는 듯하다. 그러나 실제 고고학적 양상은 그리 명확하지 않다. 우리가 일반적으로 생각하는 도구의 재질 변화는, 기존의 재질은 점차 줄어들고 새로운 재질이 점차 증가하는 ‘과도기’ 또는‘이행기’의 과정을 거쳐 새로운 재질이 완전히 정착되는 흐름을 가지고 있어야 한다. 그러나 석기에서 철기로의 변화는 그러하지 않다. 철기가 등장하기까지는 수백 년간의 시간적 공백이 존재한다. 또한 원형점토대토기 문화는 토착의 청동기시대 중기 문화와는 계통을 달리하는 것으로, 이후 삼각형점토대토기 문화에서 본격적으로 이루어지는 석기에서 철기로의 전환에 직접적인 관련이 있는 것은 원형점토대토기 문화이다. 즉 청동기시대 중기 에서 원형점토대토기 문화를‘석기의 감소’로 보아야 할 것이 아니라 청동기시대 중기의 석기 기종과 수량의 풍부함과 대비되는 현상으로 원형점토대토기 문화의 석기 양상을 확인하고 그 배경을 검토해야 한다. 본고에서는 호서지방 원형점토대토기 문화의 석기 조성을 검토하고, 석기 기종 구성의 편중은 목기의 사용과 일회적인 석기 제작·사용 방식에 의한 것으로 추정하였다.

영어 초록

The transition period from the Stone Age to the Metal Ages in the Korean Peninsula ranges from the Middle and Late Bronze Age to the stage of pottery with round clay stripes to the stage of pottery with triangular round clay stripes. During this period, stone tools were replaced with bronze tools for prestige goods, and stone tools were replaced with iron tools for practical tools. However, the actual archaeological patterns of these changes have not been clearly identified. A general perception is that changes in materials used for tools should undergo the “transition period” during which existing materials gradually decrease and new materials steadily increase, and then reach the stage in which the adoption of new materials is fully established. However, this was not the case for the transition from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. A substantial number of stone tools types were not identified in the ancient remains, and a time gap was found with hundreds of years passing until the appearance of iron tools that would replace stone tools. In addition, the culture of pottery with round clay stripes did not descend from the culture of the indigenous Middle Bronze Age. The transition from stone tools to iron tools, which began in earnest in the stage of pottery with triangular clay stripes, was directly linked with the stage of pottery with round clay stripes. In other words, the period from the Middle Bronze Age to the stage of pottery with round clay strips should not be viewed as the one marked by “decreases in stone tools”. Rather, the development of stone tools in the stage of pottery with round clay stripes should be identified as a phenomenon that contrasts with abundance in the type and quantity of stone tools in the Middle Bronze Age, and the background of this development should be reviewed accordingly. In this study, a review was performed on the development of stone tools in the Hoseo region in the culture of pottery with round clay stripes. As a result, the use of wooden tools and the production methods for stone tools were considered the factors that caused the unequal distribution of stone tools types.
