The Sangsan Kim clan has lived in Popmul Village, Sindung Myon, Sanchong County, Kyongnam Province for a long time. The clan has been influential in the area over generations and has spawned a number of officials and scholars. Among these was JinHo Kim, whose nickname was Mulchon. JinHo Kim learned Human Essence and Natural Law (Sungrihak), as well as Rituals (yehak), from such scholars as ChiBok Park, Jon Huh, and JinSang Lee in the 19th century. Archives comprising 1,709 documents, 64.2% of them letters, were found in the possession of the descendants of JinHo Kim. Most letters were addressed to him. Some of them were sent to scholars who lived in UnnakJae (a place that was used to publish SungJaeJip's posthumous writings) and in a private school, YiTaekdang. The contents of the letters include scholarly activities among the literati in the Right Region of the Nakdong River (kangwuhakpa), general greetings, and private matters. Only a small portion of JinHo Kim's letters were published after his death, probably due to the size limitation of books. It is important, therefore, to investigate the original materials. These are classified by such categories as relationships among Right Region scholars, varieties of their scholarly works, and their perception and reactions to the social situation at that time. Friendship among scholars at that time was maintained by scholarly activities and marriage bonds. JinHo Kim was especially close to Yu Huh and JongSok Kwak because they learned from the same teachers. Traditionally, the Sangsan Kim clan identified themselves as Southerners (Namin), but JinHo Kim tried to form some links with Old Doctrine (Noron) through marriages and scholarly activities. Their interests were mainly focused on discussing and publishing on Neoconfucianism. JinHo Kim endeavored to publish and to reedit Jon Huh's works, which directly reflects his concern to practise Family Rites (Yehak). Although they saw the collapsing reality of their society at that time, they could not take part in any form of reformation movement because they failed to get public opinion to reach a consensus. In the meantime, they tried to consolidate tradition but they also never neglected to explore Western Learning (SoHak).
