본 논문은 조선 지식층 사이에 널리 전해오는 嘔血臺 고사가 발생한 실체와
과정을 고찰하는데 중점을 두었다.
구혈대 고사는 명과 후금(훗날 청)이 寧遠(현 요동 興城)에서 격돌한 전쟁, 소
위 寧遠大捷을 배경으로 삼았다. 고사 속에서 후금 누르하치(奴爾哈赤)가 대군을
이끌고 영원성(현 흥성)을 공략했다가, 명 袁崇煥의 지략과 용맹에 막혀 대패를
당하자 울분에 쌓여 피를 토해내었고, 나중에 사망했다고 한다. 이때 조선 사절
의 일원으로 온 역관 韓瑗이 전쟁 상황을 직접 목격하는 증인으로 등장했다.
구혈대 고사는 李星齡의 ≪春坡堂日月錄≫에 처음 기술된 이래 조선 지식층 사이에 널리 알려졌고, 특히 사행에 나선 조선 사절은 노정에 소재한 영원을 지
나가며 구혈대 고사가 발생한 장소를 확인하곤 했다. 영원성의 동북쪽에 자리한
首山에 명 정통 연간에 세워진 봉화대가 있고, 이곳에서 내려다보면 영원성이
한 눈에 들어온다. 후대에 들어가서 구혈대 고사는 주인공이 누르하치에서 홍타
이지로 바뀌는 등 여러 형태로 변형되며 계속 발전해 나갔다.
조선 지식층이 구혈대 고사를 들먹이는 것은 굴욕적 역사를 안긴 청나라에
대해 거부감을 표시하고 명 원숭환의 승리를 통해 자신의 승리인양 일종의 대리
만족에서 나왔다. 구혈대 고사에는 실제와 허구가 병존한다. 고사에 나타난 전쟁
모습은 역사적 실체와 가깝지만, 이때 조선 사절과 역관이 출현했다는 것은 허
구이다. 원형 고사 또는 변형 고사에서 언급된 실제 역사, 즉 1626년(천계 6;
천명 11)의 영원대첩 또는 1627년(천계 7; 천총 1)의 영금대첩 때는 연행 노정
상 조선 사절이 영원과 금주로 들어올 수가 없었다. 1629년(인조 7)에 진하변무
사 李? 일행이 다시 영원을 들렀고, 이때 사절의 일원인 역관 한원이 원숭환과
몇 차례 만났는데, 한 번은 금주로 가서 원숭환과 함께 군사 훈련과 시설물을
둘러보았다. 이때 한원이 목격한 상황이 조선 지식층으로 사이에 전해졌고, 나중
에 후대 사람에 의해 확대 생산하여 구혈대 고사가 탄생하게 된 배경으로 보인
다.

영어 초록

This treatise places emphasis on studying the reality and the process
of the occurrence of the story of terrace of vomiting blood which had
been circulated among Joseon intellectuals.
The story of terrace of vomiting blood took Ningyuan Battle, a war
between Ming and Later Jin as its background. The story says that
Nurhachi of Later Jin who led a large army and attacked the city of
Ningyuan suffered a crushing defeat by the strategy and the
dauntlessness of Yuan Chonghuan of Ming, vomited blood with
resentment, and finally died. The story also tells that Han Won, a
interpreter who came to China as a member of Joseon envoy appeared
as a witness of the war.
The story of terrace of vomiting blood was widely known among
Joseon intellectuals since the story was described for the first time in
Chunpadang ilwol rok written by Lee Seongryeong. Especially, Joseon
envoys identified sometimes the place where the story was happened
when they passed Ningyuan located on the way of their journey. There is a terrace of signal fire which was established on Shoushan northeast
of the city of Ningyuan in the Zhengtong reign period. Later on, the
story of terrace of vomiting blood has developed into verious forms. For
example, the protagonist in the story has been changed from Nurhachi to
Hong Taiji.
The purpose of Joseon intellectuals' mention of the story of terrace of
vomiting blood was to show their repulsion against Qing government
causing humiliating history and to get a kind of vicarious satisfaction
through the victory of Yuan Chonghuan of Ming. Reality and fiction
coexist in the story of terrace of vomiting blood. The story's description
about the war is near to historical reality but its mention about Joseon
envoy and interpreter is fiction. It is true that Joseon envoy could not
enter into Ningyuan and Jinzhou in 1626 of Ningyuan battle or in 1627 of
Ningjin battle which are mentioned in the original story or in the
modified story. Lee Heul and his company visited again in 1629 and an
interpreter Han Won, a member of envoy met Yuan Chonghuan several
times. Han Won went to Jinzhou and looked around military training and
facility with Yuan Chonghuan. It is assumed that the situation that Han
Won witnessed was known to Joseon intellectuals and later on the story
was created by later generation's exaggeration.
