The purpose of this article is to review object relations family therapy and to discuss its applicability to a modern Korean family. The historical background of the development of object relations family therapy is briefly described, followed by the review of object relations theories, including its theoretical assumptions, a developmental model, and some key concepts. Therapeutic goals and techniques emphasized in object relations family therapy are also described. A case of a Korean family with a delinquent adolescent is presented as an example of a cross-cultural application of the theory. Finally, issues concerning cross-cultural applicability of this theory are discussed.Since object relations family therapy represents an approach which integrates the exploration of the individual and the system, it provides concepts and therapeutic techniques that help understand and effectively intervene with intrapsychic dynamics of the individual family members and the interpersonal dynamics among them. The potential applicability of the multigenerational perspective inherent in object relations family therapy is discussed as well as its cross-cultural limitations when applied to modern Korean families.
