본문내용
“Paul’s Case,” written by Willa Cather, is about a young man who does not fit in to the society. Paul was born in Colorado and his mother passed away after his birth. Paul is very different from others. He finds school uninteresting and he would rather be at the opera than in class. In this story Willa Cather illustrates how modern world defines a word “normal” in a way of being same as another.
Paul is an odd character, as far as standard of being normal is set in the society. First of all, Paul couldn`t get along with anyone. He is tall for his age and has cramped shoulders with a narrow chest. At school, he does not follow the instructions and denies any assistance. Once, when his English teacher offered help, Paul violently refused. After this incident, teachers were afraid to teach him and eventually Paul was suspended. Also, when he got suspended, Paul`s "...father had called at the Principal`s office and confessed his perplexity about his son.” His family members had no high expectations for him since he wasn`t doing well in school.
