Korean is the native language of about eighty million people in North and South Korea. In contrast to Korean, English is the language that is used throughout the six continents. Great Britain, North American, and Australia consider English as the first language. Moreover, In Indo, Africa, and Southeast regions, the second language is widely being used. The significant differences between Korean and English make it hard for most Korean ESL students to acquire English.
First of all, the first difference between Korean and English lies in their alphabet. The Korean alphabet is called Hangul. It was introduced in the 15th century by King Sejong to replace the Chinese script called Hanja, which only few Koreans could read and write. Hangul consists of fourteen simple consonants and six simple vowels. Hangul can be written horizontally or vertically. In contrast to Hangul, the English alphabet consists of twenty-six Roman letters, and it has about twenty vowel sounds and about twenty-four consonant sounds. Standard English goes up to the 15th centuries in London, and this goes up to the 9th centuries in Indo-European. By looking into the history of two languages, the history of English is much order than the history of Korean.
