Othello is one of Shakespeare’s finest tragedies, standing among great works such as King Lear, Macbeth, and Hamlet. This masterpiece has timelessly been performed by the most renowned actors and actresses. The story of Othello begins with a clandestine marriage between Othello, the respected general of Venice’s army, and Desdemona, the daughter of a Venetian senator. The plot is intensified and thrown into chaos by the character of Iago, Othello’s clever and trusted ensign. Although on the surface, the story seems to focus on the tragic love of Othello and Desdemona, much of the theme surrounds the estrangement of Iago and how he drives seemingly everyone’s lives into chaos. Thus, the overriding theme in Othello is the origination of chaos and the restoration of order. Shakespeare elaborates on this theme in several ways. First, Shakespeare uses the spoken word of Iago to create the chaos, perhaps providing a lesson in the danger of the spoken word. Second, the human vice of jealousy is used to fuel the chaos of the tragedy. Finally, the chaos ignited by the mouth of Iago and fueled by jealousy could only be extinguished through death.
