Stereotypes
To begin with it is important that stereotypes are understood and how they would affect my experience and how my experience would affect them. Limpermann (1922) identified stereotyping as the organising of images into simple and fixed categories that are used to represent an entire cultural group (cited in Samover & Porter, 2001 pp. 267-268). There is too much information about each individual to know completely, so by categorising people and behaviour into clusters we can predict the behaviours of a group (Samover & Porter, 2001, & Guirdham, 1999). Stereotypes are oversimplified, overgeneralised and exaggerated and can often a hindrance to cultural intelligence since they often shaped by the media and people who are ignorant of the other cultures (Samover & Porter, 2001). Stereotyping is natural and unavoidable (Guirdham, 1999). Therefore, by being selective of who influences your stereotypes you can have well-informed categorisations of cultural norms and values, which are flexible and open to correction.
