본문내용
John Donne’s “Batter My Heart, Three-Personed God for You” and George Herbert’s “Love” are both religious poems. Both deal with their love for God and both have a similar theme of continuous seeking for God’s blessings. In Donne’s work, he expressed how he can become truly free only when ‘ravished’ by God. In the work of Herbert, he showed hesitating movements of the speaker despite God’s unconditional welcoming. By this, we can realize that both poets presented God as male and the one confronting God as female. These two poems also share a common point of drawing God as a reachable human being and not as a spiritual existence that cannot be seen or talked to. Despite their similarities in the main theme, these two poems are completely different in various approaches.
