Mrs Mooney was a butcher`s daughter. She was a woman who was quite able to keep things to herself: a determined woman.
무니 부인은 푸줏간 집 딸이었다. 그녀는 일을 혼자서 척척 할 수 있는 여자로, 즉 과단성 있는 여자였다.
She had married her father`s foreman, and opened a butcher`s shop near Spring Gardens.
그녀는 아버지가 부리는 점원 우두머리와 결혼하고는 스프링 공원 근처에다 푸줏간을 하나 차렸다.
But as soon as his father-in-law was dead Mr Mooney began to go to the devil.
그러나 장인이 세상을 떠나기가 무섭게 무니는 놀아나기 시작했다.
He drank, plundered the till, ran headlong into debt.
그는 술꾼이 되었고 돈궤에서 돈을 훔쳐 내며 마구 빚에 빠져 들어갔다.
It was no use making him take the pledge: he was sure to break out again a few days after.
금주(禁酒)의 맹세를 시켜도 소용이 없었다. 이삼일 후에는 그것을 깨뜨려버리기가 일쑤였다.
By fighting his wife in the presence of customers and by buying bad meat he ruined his business.
그는 손님들 앞에서 아내와 싸우기도 하고 나쁜 고기를 사들이고 해서 장사를 망쳐놓았다.
One night he went for his wife with the cleaver, and she had to sleep in a neighbour`s house.
어느 날 밤에는 식칼을 들고 아내에게 달려들어 할수없이 아내는 이웃집에 가서 잘 수밖에 없었다.
After that they lived apart.
이런 일이 있은 후에 그들은 별거했다.
She went to the priest and got a separation from him, with care of the children.
그녀는 신부님에게 가서 아이들을 자기가 맡아서 기른다는 조건으로 별거의 허락을 받았다.
She would give him neither money nor food nor house-room; and so he was obliged to enlist himself as a sheriff`s man.
그리고 그녀는 남편에게 돈도 식사도 거처할 곳도 제공하려고 하지 않았다. 그래서 할 수 없이 남편은 군청소사가 되었다.
He was a shabby stooped little drunkard with a white face and a white moustache
