1. Editorial Introduction
From episode I.-ix. to I.-xi., I have changed the perspective from Jude to Arabella. In the book, Arabella was characterized as a wicked woman. I reckon, however, Jude is not considered as an ideal husband as well. These chapters are focused mainly on Jude’s perspective, so I became curious of how the story would change if the story was told in Arabella’s perspective.
2. Marriage Life in Arabella’s Perspective
Alas, we were finally married! At first, I was full of happiness at the fact that I was able to marry whom I chose. Even though it seemed that he did not have marriage exactly in his mind, I was happy nevertheless. However, on the first night, I have noticed some kind of unexpected flaw in his personality. As I unfastened my wig and hung it on the looking glass, Jude screamed in horror.
'What-it wasn't your own?'
This comment itself was a shock to me, as I have never thought that he would evaluate by my appearance. So I just made an excuse that many women in towns wear wigs. That was how our first night passed as a married couple.
There was another time when I was disappointed with my husband. I was just amusing myself by artificially producing a dimple in front of the mirror when Jude started screaming again.
'Don't do that, Arabella! There is no harm in it, but - I don't like to see you.'
'What is this man thinking about? I thought he was charmed regardless of how I looked,' I thought to myself.
I was so stressed about Jude's actions that I finally admitted the fact that I have hid for so long; I was not pregnant at the time I married him. I said that it was my mistake, but Jude seemed to be obsessed in having a child. How could a man, especially someone who is called my husband, show so much distaste about my hobbies? Have I married someone who is so naive that he cannot stand anything that is not acceptable?
