Hydrotreating is the process for removing objectionable elements from products for feedstocks by reacting them with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst. The objectionable elements include sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, halides and trace metals. Hydrotreating is also referred to as hydrodesulphurization, or HDS.
Hydrotreating serves two major purposes in a refinery.
∙ It removes impurities such as sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, halides and trace metals, from marketable products, such as fuel oils, distillates and lube oils.
∙ It removes these same impurities from feedstocks to cat crackers, cat reformers and hydrocrackers. Since these impurities are detrimental to the catalysts in these processes, hydrotreating plays a vital role in refining production
