To obtain poly(3-hexylthiophene) through polymerization using Kumada coupling reaction and purification.
-Theoretical Background
1.Kumada Coupling
Kumada coupling is a cross-coupling reaction that is useful for producing carbon-carbon bonds by the reaction of Grignard reagents and organic halides. Nickel(II) or palladium(II) is commonly used as a transition metal catalyst. The reaction is typically performed in tetrahydrofuran or de-ethyl ether as a solvent.
2.Soxhlet Extraction
Soxhlet extraction is used for solid samples with limited solubility in a solvent in the presence of insoluble impurities. A thimble equipped with a solid sample is placed inside the main chamber of the extractor. Continuous extraction takes place by refluxing the solvent using condenser. When the extraction chamber is filled, the extract is transferred to the boiling flask. This process is repeated until a complete extraction is expected.
