The notorious Jumping Frog (Mark Twain)
DQ1. What are the similarities and differences of Smiley's betting games with the three animals described by Wheeler in length?
All the three animals have advantages which make Smiley be able to win. These animals might have been trained specially or they might have acted by nature. For example, the mare seems to be sick thus she was given "two or three hundred yards start" in a race, however, she is excited and desperate to win the race in the end. The dog looks small, weak and useless, but he bite hind legs of the opponents. Finally, the frog looks plain. However he is trained to jump higher than any other ones in the country.
However they are different in the way of winning methods. First, the mare looks weak and slow but runs well at the end of the race. On the other hand, the dog has feature that bite at other dog's hind legs and hang on. Finally, the frog called Daniel webster has indifferent hind legs as if he could not jump any more than any frog might do, but he can jump high if Smiley call the frog's name and sing out. "Flies. Dan'l. Flies!" I think his way of cheating changed gradually and cleverly. In case of the mare and the dog, they have noticeable flaws so they looks different with other competitors. However the frog has any other flaws which make him look different. Therefore in case of frog, Smiley use more clever way of cheating. He seems to pretend justice to the betting.
