Washington Irving, an American writer and diplomat, was famous for his book “The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent,” “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and “Rip Van Winkle.” He was an active writer in the early 19th century, and he first wrote a book under the funny pseudonym of 'Kickerbocker.' McGann (2012) said Irving is the one who spurred the establishment of American fiction at that time. He was active when the persecuted Puritans from England settled in the United States, and as life gradually improved, Puritans established American culture and American fiction. At first, writers who were busy imitating English novels gradually began to write their own American novels and show a difference from English novels. Typically, if English novels were written with a focus on marriage and class, in the U.S., they were dealing with more macroscopic subjects like the struggle for independence, and masculinity. This paper will describe the characterization of the characters as they are depicted in “Sleepy Hollow,” as well as the authors use of various kinds of irony
