The Tale of the Heike is classified under the subgenre of Gunki monogatari (medieval war tales) in Japanese literature. The Military tales were mostly written and recorded during the Muromachi and Kamakura time periods i.e. 1156 and 1568. Other types of monogatari are rekishi (historical tales), Hogen Monogatari, setsuwa and okagami (didactic tales) and Heiji Monogatari. Gunki monogatari most renowned work is The Tale of the Heike. The Gunki monogatari (medieval war tales) were written in a mixture of Japanese and Chinese elements. The prose was majorly Japanese but many Chinese phrases were incorporated in the tale to build the plot, this was the distinguishing feature between the medieval war tales and other warrior tales e.g. Heian which were mostly written in Chinese prose and they included occasional poems i.e.
waka. The other main difference between Gunki monogatari and Heian warrior tales is that while both tales often focus around an individual warrior or samurai who brought about a major social disruption or disorder, the medieval war tales usually brings about a unique focus on various aspects of the individual warrior e.g.
