In about 500 B.C. , the first auctions occurred annually in Babylon. However, the auction products were women. Men bade the women whom they wanted to marry in the public. The price, which depended on women's conditions, could be either very high or the conditions of the women were so bad that the women had to pay in order to let the men to take them home.(USAuctions.com Inc.) On the other hand, the existence of Internet nowadays changes the traditional auction business dramatically into online auctions from products, places, auction methods and payment policies.
2. Reasons why people use auction system
In some traditional industries, customers probably are not able to negotiate the prices with companies, such as traveling agents. However, customers even can purchase service from Internet with lower prices, such as airline tickets, home mortgages, and so on. Online auction businesses have developed for four years. Nearly 2,000 person-to-person and business-to-business online auction web sites have been built. Currently, most people will probably agree that the most popular online auction service is eBay, which has the largest customer base and operated as person-to-person auction service. Since 1995, eBay's revenues keep growing from the first month in online auction business at approximately a rate of 30% a month.(Jones, 1998)
