Introduction
I. PCR
1) Definition
Polymerase Chain Reaction, PCR, is a relatively simple and cost-effective way to copy or amplify small segments of DNA or RNA. Using PCR, millions of copies of a section of DNA are made in just a few hours, yielding enough DNA required for analysis. PCR allows clinicians to diagnose and monitor disease using a minimal amount of sample, such as blood or tissue.
2) Components of PCR
- DNA template: the sample DNA that contains the target sequence
- DNA polymerase: a type of enzyme that synthesize new strands of DNA
complementary to the target sequence
- Primers: short pieces of DNA that are made in a laboratory. Primers are necessary because DNA polymerase can’t attach at just any old place and start copying away.
