“A Doll’s House” (1879) by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), who is often referred to as ‘the father of realism,’ is a three-act play that dealt with the issue of women’s emancipation in a male-dominated world. The plot that the protagonist Nora, who is the obedient housewife in middle-class Victorian family, leaves her husband and children to choose the path of ‘human’ rather than ‘doll’ shocked the 19th-century conservative European society and other parts of the world(e.g., China, Japan, Korea) as lately translated. From the feministic perspective, this paper will examine the book’s critique of patriarchal prejudices and discriminations and the resistance and self-realization of women, which is expressed by the new woman model, Nora. Also, this paper will discuss the book’s implications for South Korea in 1920 and in the present time.
