Elementary Noun Phrases
- Reflexive Pronoun vs. Ordinary Pronoun
There are two kinds of pronouns; reflexive pronoun and ordinary pronoun. We already know what ordinary pronoun is, and reflexive pronoun includes myself, yourself, himself, herself, ourselves, and so on. In sentences, we should be careful to distinguish their differences and use them well because their distribution is quite different.
John believes that [we deceived ourselves]
*John believes that [we deceived us]

The use of the definite article
There are two different articles ‘definite and indefinite’. In this part, I will talk about cases of using definite article ‘the’. Basically, we use definite article ‘the’ when both the speaker and hearer know what the thing is. For example, if the speaker and hearer look at the certain dog, the speaker can say the sentence like ‘The dog is cute’. However, if the speaker is pointing at any dogs in general, the speaker should say this ‘A dog is cute’. Moreover, there are other cases where you can you definite article instead of indefinite articles.
