TOPIC 1
Neural control mechanisms
Lecture 1: Neuronal structure and communication
1. After completing your reading you should be able to identify on a diagram (and
Briefly state the functional significance of) the following structures:
• Cell body
• Dendrites
• Axon hillock (initial segment)
• Axon (and microtubules)
• Axon terminals
• Myelin
• Nodes of Ranvier
2. You should also be able to comment on some of the general functions of glial cells, especially oligodendroglia (oligodendrocytes) and Schwann cells. Glial cells outnumber neurons yet their functions are not well understood, certainly not at the same level of detail as their neuron counterparts.
Functions of glial cells- support and repair neural tissue and supply nutrients to neurons
Function of oligodendrocytes- These neuroglial cells of the CNS form the insulation of the axons exclusively in the CNS
Function of Schwann-surround all axons in PNS; responsible for myelination of peripheral axons; participate in repair process after injury
