What is Philosophy? Why is it Important to Me?
The word Philosophy was invented by Pythagoras. The word came from the Greek word philia, which means love, and sophias, which means wisdom. Thus, philosophy literally means “the love of wisdom”. According to an ancient tradition, Pythagoras thought that no man could possess wisdom, which is a most comprehensive and profound knowledge of things. Wisdom was the privileged possession only of God. Therefore he said, no man could justly call himself “wise”. At best he could only call himself a “lover” or “seeker” of wisdom, that is, a philosopher.
Philosophy is a science. However, it is not a science in the corrupt sense that restricts the donation of the word to physics, chemistry, and the other experimental sciences. Rather, it is a science in its original signification as certo cognito per causas, which means “a knowledge of things attained by an investigation of their causes.”
