Introduction
Wal-Mart
The company opened up its first Wal-Mart in Rogers, Arkansas with co-founders of Sam and Bud Walton. It was founded by Sam Walton in 1962, incorporated on Oct. 31, 1969, and listed on the NYSE in 1972. It is currently the world’s largest public corporation by revenue, according to the 2007 Fortune Global 500. It is also the largest grocery retailer in the U.S. (with estimate of 20% of retail grocery and consumables business as well as the largest toy seller in U.S., estimate of 22% share in the toy market). Wal-Mart has more than 7,000 stores in 14 different markets inside and outside the U.S. with 1.8 million employees worldwide. Some of its competitors are Kmart, Target, ShopKo, Meijer, and Canada’s Zellers, Winners, or Giant Tiger. Competitors of Wal-Mart’s wholesale branch, Sam’s Club, are Costco and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
