본문내용
Mickalene Thomas is one of the most prominent African-American contemporary artists currently working in the US. Born in Camden, New Jersey, in 1971, Thomas was influenced by her mother, who put her in after-school programs at the Newark Museum and the Henry Street Settlement in New York. She was exposed to an artistic environment every day. She also became friendly with lots of musicians and saw many shows and exhibitions when she was in college. At that time, she dealt with African-American women in her early works . Now, she is known for dealing with issues of gender inequality, race, and sexual difference in her art. She draws on inspiration including her mother, the perspective of African-American people in the US, and images from classic paintings.
“Marie: Femme noire nué couchée” (Marie: Nude Black Woman Reclining), (2012) (Figure 1) is a painting that has an overwhelming atmosphere. This huge artwork is situated in a wood paneled setting with rhinestones, acrylic, oil, and enamel.
