1. Definition of Syllable
(1) 사전적 정의
① Longman OnlineDictionary: A word or part of a word which contains a single vowel sound.

A unit of spoken language that is next bigger than a speech sound and consists of one or more vowel sounds alone or of a syllabic consonant alone or of either with one or more consonant sounds preceding or following

이러한 Syllable의 내적 구조를 볼 때 명심해야 할 점이 세 가지가 있다.
(1) Rhyme을 이루는 nucleus와 coda의 조합은 임의적인 것이 아니다.
우선 Rhyme은 onset과 다른 단위적 특성을 갖는다. 즉, 어떤 두 단어가 rhyme을 이루기 위해서는 동일한 syllabic rhyme을 공유해야 한다. 그리고 alliteration과 spoonerism에서는 onset이 그 주체적 지위를 갖는다.
(2) Syllable을 구성하는 세 구성요소(onset, nucleus, coda)중 오직 nucleus만이 존재의 의무을 갖는다. 즉, onset과 coda의 존재는 선택적이다.
(3) 모든 Nucleus가 반드시 vowel은 아니다.
