SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To persuade my audience that the federal government should pass a law requiring all states to abolish the death penalty.

Thesis Sentence: The United States’ Congress should pass a law abolishing the death penalty in all 50 states, to ensure fairness, justice and to make better use of taxpayers’ dollars.

Death Penalty, Justice for All?

INTRODUCTION

I.Attention-getter: What would you do if you had to carry out the death penalty? Could you pull the electric switch, inject the poison, shoot the bullet and watch the convicted die before your eyes at your hand, only to find out later that they were innocent?
II.Thesis Sentence: The United States’ Congress should pass a law abolishing the death penalty in all 50 states, to ensure fairness, justice and to make better use of taxpayers’ dollars.
III.Establish Credibility and relate topic to audience: Right now we are all in the state of Texas. A state which is notorious for its extensive use of the death penalty, every year taxpayers shell out their hard earned dollars, and for what? The truth is this system that we think sounds so great is actually unfair and costly to us and in turn it hurts more than it helps, even if we would like to think otherwise. In Texas each death penalty case cost the taxpayers $2.3M, three times the cost of putting the person away in the highest security prison for 40 years (Death Penalty Information Center, 2010).
IV.Preview the main points: First I will discuss what is currently wrong with the death penalty, then I will discuss the alternative, and lastly we will look at the way America could be if we implemented those changes.
