To obtain cost advantages, Apple has to shift its strategy from being a pure differentiator to combining the advantages of cost leadership and differentiation strategies simultaneously. The key factor here is to achieve significant economies of scale and to decrease production process to low labor costs countries.
Apple’s task is to efficiently coordinate the unique components needed for its technology to adhere the existing high standards. Apple in the past had not tried for nothing to control the whole supply chain management on its own, but within an industry where critical mass has to be reached in order to be profitable, Jobs has to realize that Design doesn’t always means profitable.
If business level strategy can have some support with savings from cost reductions in functional level somehow, this can be a strong tool and barrier to entry and reduce rivalry inside the industry. If so, Apple can use limit pricing to deter potential entry as it now does, with a lower cost structure, can survive lasting price battles and efficiently warning the environment that it won’t let any firm take market share away, especially if it had the same customer groups.
