본문내용
Although The Canterbury Tales is somewhat comical and satirical, Geoffrey Chaucer shows accurate representation of the attitudes of love at that time. One of the views is very traditional such as that of Franklin’s Tale and Knight’s Tale. On the other hand, Miller’s Tale and Wife of Bath’s Tale show more liberal idea. By presenting these two different contradicting attitudes, Chaucer emphasizes the difference of people’s expectation and perception of love according to the social status.
First of all, Knight, the highest social ranker, tells a tale that shows his expectation of love. In the beginning of the tale, Theseus faces four kneeled widows who stand in his way. Theseus is insulted by those women, because he thought that they grudge the celebration of the victory. However, it turns out that widows has just lost their husbands, and are in a great grief: “Help us, my Lord, it lies within your power./ I, wretched Queen, that weep aloud my woe,” (Chaucher, 32) Their husbands died at the siege of the city of Thebes
