본문내용
Foreign languages are taught and learned in various places, some in informal settings, and others in formal contexts, such as classrooms. It is common knowledge that regardless of the method used, second language learners achieve mastery of the target language to varying degrees. Although 10 individuals may be in the same language class for a year, their eventual proficiency level and profile will be different from one another.
Therefore, principles of effective foreign language teaching require understanding what students know and need to learn and then challenging and supporting them to learn it well. Using suitable curricular materials for contextualisation, using appropriate instructional tools for practice, techniques to support learning (repetition), and pursuing continuous self-improvement by assessment are principles on foreign language teaching that take in various teaching places.
Once you learned something new from a very good teacher, what did that teacher do that assisted your learning? Probably, the teacher found a way to make your new learning meaningful by connecting it in some way to what you already knew or had experienced. This is what contextualisation means, and it provides an essential scaffold for learners, especially foreign language learners.
