본문내용
“Competence” is often referred in theoretical linguistics, social linguistics language test and second language acquisition, so it is a fundamental and important notion in several branch disciplines of linguistics. However, it’s so far been in a state of muddle that puzzles the learners of linguistics and hinders the further study of linguistics in practice. This paper first describes the main achievements of the relative studies, then anatomizes three typical notions relating “competence”,and afterward argues that “competence”(or ability) should be divided mainly into four different conceptions. In different applied disciplines, they can choose any of the four conception according to the practice. “Competence” has abundant contents, of which we choose to study is depend on first the study object in the first language or in the second language, and then the study target in theoretical or in practical.
0. The importance and achievements of “language competence”
“Competence” is a very important notion in linguistics. Generative linguist thinks “its(linguistics’) concern is competence, the system of rules and principles that we assume have,…”(Chomsky,1980:201); Language testing specialist says “A clear and explicit definition of language ability is essential to all language development and use” (Bachman, 1990:3-4); second language acquisition researcher argues “The main goal of SLA (second language acquisition) research is to characterize learners’ underlying knowledge of the second language, i.e. to describe and explain their competence” (Ellis, 1994: 12).
