1. T-to-C Movement

A complementiser phrase/CP, with the head C position of CP is filled by a complemetiser such as that/for/if. But, you should know that only complemetisers are not the word which can be filled in front of the subjects in clause.

Speaker A: Honey-buns, there`s something I wanted to ask you
Speaker B: What, sweetie-pie?
Speaker A: If you will marry me
Speaker B (pretending not to hear): What d`you say, darlin`?
Speaker A: Will you marry me?

Let`s compare two bold sentences. First of all, the first bold sentence is introduced by a complemetiser, if.

Next, let`s consider the second sentence; Will you marry me. We can also know that an inverted auxiliary, will is occupied in the pre-subject position like a complemetiser. As I told you before, only complemetisers are not be positioned in front of a subejects. In here, we need to think about this sentence; *If will you marry me. As you now easily, this is a wrong sentence. It means both if and will can`t not be occupied in front of subjects. They are mutually exclusive. Because both a complemetiser and an inverted auxiliary gives us an empirical evidence that inverted auxiliaries can be positioned in the same structural position like complemetisers. So, inverted auxiliaries are positioned in the head C position of CP.
