1. Introduction
2. Split CP: Force, Topic, and Focus projections
3. Spilt CP: Finiteness projection
4. Split VPs: VP shells in ergative structures.
본문내용
1. Introduction
(1) I play the piano. → CP + TP + VP
(2) He may be playing the piano. → CP + TP + AUXP + VP
(3) We played the piano, said the students. → CP + VP + AspP + VP
In this chaper, we will suggest that CPs, VPs, NPs should be split into multiple projections. Also, CP layer should be split into a number of separate projections: Force Phrase, Topic Phrase, Focus Phrase, and Finiteness Phrase.
2. Split CP: Force, Topic, and Focus projections
(5) No other colleague would he turn to (He would turn to no other colleague)
(6) [CP No other colleague[C would][TP he [T[T would][VP[V turn][PP[P to]no other colleague]]]]
(7) I am absolutely convinced [that no other colleague would he turn to]
(8) Split CP hypothesis: Luigi Rizzi (1997, 2001b, 2003) proposes that CP should be split into a number of different projections.
(10) Focus vs. Topic
a. A focused constituent typically means new information.
b. Topics typically represent old information.
