본문내용
1. IntroductionThis paper is about analyzing an intercultural encounter that could occur in daily life using the concepts that we have dealt with in the class. I chose the situation which I experienced here in Sweden. I found some concepts of Edward .H and Hofstede that are closely connected to this situation.
2. Situation Description
During our first month in Sweden, we had quite lots of parties. Since two of my Korean friends were living in the shared apartment with other exchange students, one day, one of us suggested having a dinner party there with all the roommates together. There were 5 people (2 Koreans, 1 American, 1 Canadian, 1 Chinese) sharing the same apartment. I and 2 Swedes (host students) were invited to that party too. We all agreed to meet at 6 o’clock on Friday in downtown to buy groceries for dinner together.
A couple of hours before the appointment, one of Korean friends called and told me that she might be a little late for the appointment and asked if it’s okay to move our appointment half an hour back. It’s no problem with me and the other Korean friend as well, but American and Swedish friends said it’s too late to change the appointed time and just told her to come as soon as possible. At 6 pm, we all got together except her started waiting for her. However, they (2 Swedes, 1 American and 1 Canadian) soon decided to go shopping first and we (2 Koreans, 1 Chinese) stayed and waited until she showed up. It took about 30 minutes.

3. Individualism vs. Collectivism
I’d like to start with the concepts of individualism and collectivism. This is one of Hofstede’s four dimensions (dimension is an aspect of a culture that can be measured relative to other cultures). These are defined as follows in the textbook. Individualism pertains to societies in which the ties between individuals are loose:
