Environmentally Sound and Sustainable Development

Hainan Island, one of few tropical regions in China, was designated as an open, special economic zone in 1983, and became a formal province in 1988. Since then, the local government has been launching ambitious plans for economic developments, but its environment is becoming increasingly disrupted and the island is now seeking for means of implementing sustainable growth. The tropical economy is greatly dependent on the region`s natural-resources superiority, which includes abundant mineral deposits and tourist attraction. The rampant economic changes across the island has gave birth to environmental pollution, which is becoming more and more obvious in cities and coastal areas and is threatening the potential for fishing, tourism, and agriculture.
