초록

The present study is aimed at investigating what strategies are used to express politeness in Internet discourse. First, Korean speakers use honorific expressions such as the honorific term of address ‘nim’ and the personal honorific ‘pwun’, and the formal suffix ‘-supnita’ to represent politeness in text-based communication. The honorific address ‘nim’ and the personal honorific ‘pwun’ are used to express politeness regardless of age or social status in most anonymous communication network. The formal suffix ‘-supnita’ which is not frequently used in face-to-face conversation, is often used as a politeness strategy in Internet discourse. Second, Korean speakers use code switching on SNS as a politeness strategy. They select their marked code not to deliver their message directly, which satisfies the speakers’ needs but does not impose burden to the hearers. Third, participants in Internet discourse use emoticons, onomatopoeia and mimetic words to save each other’s face. Their usage can mitigate the possible face threats and help the speakers express their emotions effectively in text-based communication. Fourth, speakers try continuously to respond to each other in a collaborative way in text-based interaction.
