초록

본 논문은 조선시대 문인들이 중국의 고전인 『昭明文選』에 수록된 謝莊의 「月賦」를 어떻게 수용하고 변용하였는지를 탐구하였다. 구체적인 분석 대상으로는 沈義의 「擬月賦」, 朴泰淳의 「擬月」, 李沃의 「擬月」 세 작품을 설정하여, 각 작품이 원작의 형식과 수사적 특징을 어떻게 계승·발전시켰으며, 시대적·정치적 맥락과 작가의 개인적 경험이 어떻게 문학적 변용으로 나타났는지를 종합적으로 고찰하였다.
분석 결과, 세 작품은 공통적으로 사장 「월부」의 형식적 특징인 군신 대화체, 간접적 달 묘사, 서정적 노래 등을 계승하였다. 그러나 각 작품은 각기 다른 방식으로 이를 독자적으로 변용하였다. 심의의 작품은 屈原의 ‘思美人’ 모티프를 활용하여 군주에 대한 충성과 현실 정치에 대한 환멸을 동시에 표현하며 우국충정을 드러냈다. 박태순의 작품은 숙종 시대 인현왕후 폐위와 복위를 둘러싼 정치적 맥락을 적극적으로 반영하며 원작의 우울과 비애를 낙관적이고 적극적인 현실 극복 의지로 재구성하였다. 이옥의 작품은 夢遊 모티프와 도교적 초월 세계에 대한 갈망을 전면에 부각시키면서도, 유교적 名敎와의 긴장 관계를 통해 현실 정치에 대한 비판적 인식을 담아냈다.
본 연구는 박태순과 이옥이 같은 시대에 속했으나 소속 당파(서인·남인)에 따라 상이한 문학적 미감을 형성했음을 밝혔다. 박태순은 서인의 정치적 낙관성과 현실적 희망을, 이옥은 남인의 정치적 좌절과 현실 회의를 작품에 반영하였다. 이를 통해 조선시대 문인들이 중국 고전 賦를 단순히 모방한 것이 아니라, 자신들이 속한 정치적·사회적 현실과 개인적 내면 갈등을 독창적으로 융합하여 새롭게 재해석했음을 밝혔다.
본 연구는 조선 후기 한문학이 중국 고전을 주체적으로 변용했으며, 작품의 시대·정치적 함의를 분명히 했다는 점에 의의가 있다. 앞으로의 연구에서는 보다 다양한 시대적 맥락과 정치적 배경을 포괄적으로 다루어, 조선 한문학의 다층적이고 복합적인 의미를 더욱 심층적으로 규명할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This study explores how Korean literati of the Joseon dynasty accepted and transformed Xie Zhuang’s (謝莊, 421–466) classical Chinese work “Yuefu” (月賦; “Fu on the Moon”) from the Wenxuan (文選). Specifically, this paper analyzes three Joseon-era adaptations: Shim Ui’s (沈義) Imitation of Yuefu (擬月賦), Park Tae-sun’s (朴泰淳) Imitation of Yuefu (擬月), and Lee Ok’s (李沃) Imitation of Yuefu (擬月). It examines how each author inherited and developed the formal structure and rhetorical features of Xie Zhuang’s original work, and investigates how historical and political contexts, as well as each author’s personal experiences, influenced their literary transformations.
The analysis reveals that all three works maintained core stylistic elements from Xie Zhuang’s original, such as the dialogue between ruler and minister, indirect depictions of the moon, and lyrical insertions. However, each author uniquely adapted these characteristics. Shim Ui incorporated Qu Yuan’s (屈原) “Simiren” (思美人, “Longing for the Beautiful One”) motif to simultaneously express loyalty toward the ruler and disillusionment with contemporary politics, effectively conveying his patriotic sorrow. Park Tae-sun reflected political circumstances surrounding Queen Inhyeon’s (仁顯王后) deposition and reinstatement during King Sukjong’s (肅宗) reign, transforming the original melancholic tone into an optimistic and proactive desire for political restoration. Lee Ok employed dream-journey motifs and Taoist transcendental imagery to express yearning for spiritual freedom, yet simultaneously critiqued political reality through Confucian morality, highlighting a tension between transcendental escapism and ethical duty.
Notably, Park Tae-sun (aligned with the Western faction) and Lee Ok (of the Southern faction), though contemporaries, presented contrasting literary sensibilities influenced by their respective political affiliations: Park’s work reflects optimism and hope characteristic of the politically ascendant Westerners, while Lee’s expresses the disillusionment and critique emblematic of the politically marginalized Southerners.
This research confirms that Joseon literati did not merely imitate Chinese classics but creatively reinterpreted them by integrating their contemporary socio-political contexts and personal inner conflicts. The significance of this study lies in elucidating the originality and autonomy of Joseon-era literary adaptations, thereby enhancing the understanding of their socio-political implications. Future research should explore broader historical contexts and political frameworks to further uncover the multilayered and complex dimensions of Joseon-period classical literature.
