마음의 통합을 위한 남북한주민 가치관 비교: 물질-탈물질주의 가치를 중심으로 (A Comparison of Values between South Korean and North Korean Refugees, for the Unification of Mind: Centering on the Values of Materialism-Postmaterialism)

초록

본 연구는 남북한 사회통합에 영향을 미치는 마음적 요소로써, 현재 대한민국에서 함께 살아가고 있는 남한주민과 북한이탈주민의 물질-탈물질주의를 비교해보고, 남한주민과 북한이탈주민의 물질-탈물질주의에 영향을 미치는 요인은 각각 어떻게 차이가 나는지 분석하여 남북한 마음의 통합을 위해 남한주민과 북한이탈주민의 가치관이 탈물질주의로 이행할수 있도록 하는 방안을 제시해 보고자 하였다. 그 결과, 물질-탈물질주의는 북한이탈주민의 평균이 3.08, 남한주민 평균은 3.10으로 나타났으며, 남한주민과 북한이탈주민 모두 ‘자녀들에게, 경제적으로 성공한 사람보다 인격적으로 훌륭한 사람이 되라고 가르친다’는 문항의 응답에서 가장 높은 평균을 보였다. 유의미한 차이가 나타난 하위문항은 3가지이다. ‘국가 경제 성장보다 국민이 국가정책 결정에 참여할 권리가 더 중요하다’에서는 북한이탈주민의 탈물질주의가 더 높게 나타났으며, ‘국가 질서 유지보다 개인 자유 존중이 더 중요하다’와 ‘돈을 많이 버는 것보다 가족들과 함께 시간을 보내는 것이 더 중요하다’ 라는 문항에서는 남한주민의 탈물질주의가 더 높았다. 아울러 두 집단의 물질-탈물질주의 영향요인을 살펴보면, 북한이탈주민은 연령이 어릴수록, 월수입이 많을수록 탈물질주의가 높게 나타났고, 남한주민은 정치적 성향이 진보적일수록 탈물질주의가 높은 경향을 보였다. 본 연구에서는 앞서 이론적 검토를 통해 물질주의보다 탈물질주의가 통합적 마음에 가깝다는 결론을 얻은 바, 첫째, 높은 연령의 북한이탈주민들의 경제활동을 지원하고 사회체제 이행에 대한 거부감을 해소하는 지속적인 교육, 둘째, 물질주의를 뛰어넘는 탈물질적 통일 당위성 논리를 고민하고 공유하는 노력 등을 통해 남북한주민이 탈물질주의로 이행할 수 있음을 시사한다.

영어초록

This study aimed to compare the materialism-postmaterialism of South Korean residents and North Korean defectors, living together in South Korea, as an element of mind influencing the integration of South and North Korean societies. This study also aimed to analyze the difference between the elements affecting the materialism-postmate-rialism of South Korean residents and North Korean defectors, in order to suggest a way in which the values of South Korean residents and North Korean defectors could progress toward postmaterialism to unite the minds of South and North Korea.
Results showed the average of North Korean defectors’ materialism-postmaterialism to be 3.08, while the average for South Korean residents was 3.10. Both South Korean residents and North Korean defectors demonstrated the highest average in the response to the item, ‘I teach my child to be a respectable person rather than an economically successful person.’ The following were the 3 subordinate items that showed a significant difference. For the item, ‘Citizens’ right to participate in national policy making is more important than national economic growth, the postmaterialism of North Korean defectors was higher, while for the items ‘Respect for personal liberty is more important than maintaining national order’ and ‘Spending time with family is more important than earning a lot of money,’ the postmaterialism of South Korean residents was higher. Looking at the factors influencing the materialism-postmaterialism of the two groups, North Korean defectors who demonstrated higher postmaterialism were younger and had higher monthly income; South Korean residents who demonstrated higher postmaterialism had more progressive political tendencies. Building on the finding of a previous theoretical study that postmaterialism is closer to a unified mind than is materialism, this study suggests that residents of South and North Korea can progress toward postmaterialism through the following measures: first, by supporting the economic activity of older North Korean defectors and providing a continuous education to relieve repulsion toward implementing a social order; and second, by making efforts to consider and share a postmaterialistic justification for unification that transcends materialism.
