The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of animation on the AAC symbol recognition of children with intellectual disabilities (ID). The primary question of this study was whether there were any significant mean differences in the symbol recognition accuracy between pre- and post-test of the animation symbol instruction for the students with ID, and the secondary question was whether there were any developmental effect such as intellectual ability, age, and grade on the symbol recognition accuracy of children with ID. Participants were 22 elementary school students with mild to moderate ID. Participants’ symbol recognition accuracy was measured by the pre- and post-test using 20 static symbols and their corresponding 20 animated symbols displayed in the 11.6 inch slate tablet PC. The result showed that there was a statistically significant mean difference between pre-and post-tests of the participants’ symbol recognition accuracy. However, the participants’ symbol recognition accuracy was not correlated with their IQ, age, and grade. Further study needs to be conducted with a large sample and a control group.
